Policy Statements on the Military

National Guard soldiers are members of our community. Over 75% of them hold community jobs. When called upon, they have volunteered and trained to put their lives on the line to defend our country and assist our state. In fact, the Vermont Guard has had the highest per capita loss of life in overseas combat - 14 Vermont guardsmen have died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We owe the Vermont National Guard our thanks and our support. One unfortunate fact is that is that we are the only New England state which does not offer any college tuition benefits as part of the compensation package to the men and women serving in the Guard. This is unacceptable - these soldiers are serving an extremely vital role and deserve our support in truly becoming the best that they can be. As a State Senator I will push hard to include in-state college tuition support for active members of our National Guard.
